Black Duck by Janet Taylor Lisle

Years afterwards, Ruben Hart tells the story of how, in 1929 Newport, R.I., he and his friend Jed found a dead body on the shore. They found out later it was due to conspiracy. He then describes how his family and Jed's family were caught up in the violent competition among groups trying to control the local rum-smuggling trade. This book is about friendship, family, hard choices, and a betrayal so deep it may never be forgiven.

Okay-answers to what? If you ask a question, I will try to answer (assuming I can get my hands on the book.)
