Born to Rock by Gordon Korman

Leo Caraway, a future Harvard student, learns that his biological father is the lead singer of Purge, the most popular punk rock band ever seen. At first, Leo is horrified to learn that his father is a rock legend, but when his Harvard scholarship is revoked after he is falsely accused of cheating on a test, he needs his father's help. Leo accepts a job as a roadie on Purge's summer tour, secretly hoping to get his father to pay his Harvard tuition.

I enjoyed this book--then again, I usually enjoy Gordon Korman's books. He tends to do humorous looks at a "fish out of water" situation. In this one, the main character, Leo, is a member of the Young Republicans club at his high school and looking forward to going to Harvard. He learns that his father is really Marion X. McMurphy, better known as King Maggot, the front man for the punk band Purge--also known as "the angriest band in rock 'n roll." When Leo loses his scholarship to Harvard, he takes a job as a roadie with Purge, now on a Lollapallooza type tour, hoping to learn more about his father and eventually ask him to foot the bill.

As you can imagine, the clash between Young Republicans and the punk rock scene creates most of the humor. Leo is very likeable, as are his friend, Melinda, and his friends.

Korman's next book, Schooled, is on the 08-09 Lone Star list, and has a similar structure--in this case a boy who has been raised and homeschooled on a commune is suddenly thrust into a public high school, so if you like Born to Rock you should read Schooled, too.
