Pieces of Georgia: A Novel by Jen Bryant

In journal entries to her mother, a gifted artist who died suddenly, thirteen-year-old Georgia McCoy reveals how her life changes after she receives an anonymous gift membership to a nearby art museum.

What a very sweet, very sad, very hopeful book. Georgia and her father are both shy and quiet, so they have never really expressed their mutual grief over the death of Georgia's mother. Because she is so quiet and sometimes prone to stomach aches, her school has labeled her "at risk" and she has to go see the school counselor. It is the counselor that gives her a journal which she uses to write to her mother.

Take a look a Jen Bryant's website.
