Heat by Mike Lupica

Pitching prodigy Michael Arroyo is on the run from social services after being banned from playing Little League baseball because rival coaches doubt he is only 12-years-old. Michael has no parents to offer them proof. Just when the shadows in his life grow darker, heroes emerge, and for Michael, heroes don't come any bigger than the Yankees.

Thanks for your comment! This is another book that I haven't read (yet) but I really want to try to read all the books on the list this year. So many books, so little time!

I just finished this last night, and it was wonderful. I was getting so worried about Michael and did not think that there would be a happy ending. For all their fear of Official Persons, both Carlos and Michael encountered good people who really wanted to help. (Though you would think that Michael, who is keeping an awfully big secret, would be a little more understanding when he finds that someone is keeping a secret from him.)
