Notes from the Midnight Driver by Jordan Sonnenblick

Alex finds that being 16 isn't easy. His parents are separated, and his father is now dating his former third grade teacher. He ends up getting into some trouble with the law and is ordered to do community service at a nursing home. During his service there, Alex befriends a cantankerous old man who has some lessons to impart about jazz guitar playing, love, and forgiveness.

I enjoyed this book. There weren't any big surprises (well, there is one kinda medium surprise at the end, but if you're paying close enough attention--I wasn't--you'll be expecting it.) But really this is one of those books where the plot isn't that important--it's the characters and their relationships that make the story. I like Alex. I like Sol, the old man that Alex is assigned to work with and eventually becomes a surrogate grandfather. There is a lot of humor here, even with some serious stuff going on.

Take a look at Jordan Sonnenblick's website.
