Gideon the Cutpurse: Being the First Part of the Gideon Trilogy by Linda Buckley-Archer
Ignored by his father and sent to Derbyshire for the weekend, twelve-year-old Peter and his new friend, Kate, are accidentally transported back in time to 1763 England where they are befriended by a reformed cutpurse.
This is the first part of a trilogy. The second volume, The Time Thief, is due to be published Dec. 26, 2007. The paperback version of Gideon the Cutpurse has been retitled The Time Travelers.

I had been hearing a lot of good things about this book, but I still put off reading it for a while. England of the 1760s is not my favorite time period, and the summaries I read didn't really grab my interest. Once I did start reading it, though, I quickly got into it and was reluctant to put it down. Peter is an only child who feels neglected by his father. (Strangely, he doesn't feel neglected by his mother, though both parents seem to put their careers before him.) Kate is part of a large and loving family. You know that under other circumstances, they would never be friends. But an accident with an experimental anti-gravity machine sends the two of them back in time--though they stay in the same location. They encounter Gideon, a young man who was reluctantly forced to become a cutpurse (or a pickpocket) for his employer but who is a really decent person and helps them acclimate to their new situation as they try to figure out a way home. The story comes to a satisfying conclusion while still setting up for the next volume.
