Dairy Queen: A Novel by Catherine Gilbert Murdock
After spending her summer running the family farm and training the quarterback for her school's rival football team, D.J., 16, decides to go out for the sport herself, not anticipating the reactions of those around her. An expert only with cows and football, she will learn a lot about love.
D.J.'s father has injured his hip working with the manure spreader. Big brother Bill is off at college, Mom is a teacher and assistant principal at the local elementary school, and little brother Curtis helps out as much as he can but he's still young. That means that D.J. is pretty much working the farm by herself. And you thought your life was hard! So a family friend (and high school football coach) sends over someone to help out with the haying--Brian Nelson, quarterback for the rival school's football team. Brian is not used to physical labor so he's more hindrance than help, but slowly he and D.J. learn to work together and she helps him train for the upcoming football season.
If you enjoy this book, the sequel, "The Off Season" is already out and the author is currently working on a third book about D.J.
